…as Kakoma insists on court action

By OSCAR MALIPENGA

UPND is daydreaming in suggesting that courts can overturn the 2016 presidential election results, lawyer Makebi Zulu has said.

Mr. Zulu was reacting to United Party for National Development (UPND) spokesperson Charles Kakoma’s insistence that it was possible for the courts to overturn the 2016 presidential election results.

Mr. Zulu, who is Eastern province minister and Malambo Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament, said the only avenue that provided for nullification was by way of a petition to the Constitutional Court but it had already determined their fate. Meanwhile, Rainbow party leader Wynter Kabimba said the UPND was chasing wind by hoping for the courts will overturn the 2016 presidential elections and declare Hakainde Hichilema as dully elected head of State.

Mr Kabimba, a lawyer and former Minister of Justice and Patriotic Front secretary-general, said that what the UPND ought to do instead was to make a bold political decision and accept that President Lungu is head of State.

And Mr Makebi said there being no petition before the constitutional court anything else was a dream very soon they would wake up.

“They are allowed to dream because it is not possible. There is no petition before the Constitutional Court, the only court that has jurisdiction to overturn the voting,” he said.

Mr. Zulu said Zambians had already accepted their vote which was is an expression of the will that the President should be Edgar Lungu and he is President.

He said anyone else who contested and lost had all accepted apart the UPND who were daydreaming.

“The sooner they wake up the better. They should take a leaf from President Micheal Sata (late) when he lost he graciously accepted and went down to work.

“There can only be one winner and that is Edgar Chagwa Lungu and all they have  now is an opportunity to wait for another election but if ever they will win I doubt it because already they have shown that they cannot be trusted they have shown that they wanted it at all costs but against the will of the people,” he said.
