President Michael Sata has allegedly resigned from governing the country and his government has now resorted to grand lawlessness, opposition Movement of Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has charged.
And the MMD has asked President Sata to stop threatening diplomats accredited to Zambia saying it would be uncomfortable for the diplomats to work with him
MMD president Nevers Mumba said it was frightening that President Michael Sata has become an absentee leader and that his presence was only seen in his brutal actions through State police.
Addressing a media briefing at the MMD secretariat yesterday, Dr Mumba said Zambia should not expect any civility or order from President Sata and the PF because the administration believed in barbaric ways of governance.
Dr Mumba said President Sata was only seen at swearing in ceremonies as he was avoiding meeting the people or addressing the country on many important issues. The President has allegedly failed to meet pleope’s expectations.
“Zambia has no president. The man we call president stays in State House just to swearin his appointees and some of them even twice. Sata has resigned himself from governing the country and that is why the PF has become a lawless government,
“ He cannot meet the people and we thought he could come out to address issues like rising meali meal prices, bus fares, unemployment and attend to the concerns of cotton growers,” Dr Mumba said.
He explained that President Sata’s effect was now being felt only through police brutality adding that Zambians must stop laughing each time Mr Sata did things which were a danger to democracy.
Dr Mumba said the action by police to stop the UPND from holding its rally in Kanyama Conpound at the weekend even with a High Court order to do so, was a severe blow and assault on democracy.
He said Mr Sata through the police ensured that the UPND rally was stopped with the total disregard of the High Court order.
The MMD president observed that the diminishing presence of Mr Sata on the streets and the country as a whole was pure sign of an excessive and oppressive regime.
“What happened in Kanyama has sent waves of concern and deep disappointment around the country and the world. When a president’s presence begins to diminish on the streets and around the nation, the next development is the excessive use of the police force. This is a sign of a failing government,” he said.
Dr Mumba stated that no government in the world has ever succeeded by unleashing the police and security wings on the opposition and advised Mr Sata to seek dialogue with the opposition and the general citizenry.
And Dr Mumba has said President Sata should stop intimidating and harassing diplomats because he was sending wrong diplomatic message to the world.
“Leave the diplomats alone and concentrate on fulfilling the promises you made to Zambians. Hakainde Hichilema and Nevers Mumba are now his problems because he has failed to work on his promises. If the promises he made have
become problems he should not turn or think it’s us who are his problems,” Mumba said.
