Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have accused the Patriotic Front (PF) government of cheating them of an all inclusive NGO Act promised to replace the 2009 Act before the 2011 general elections.

Forum for Democratic Process (FODEP) Chairperson McDonald Chipenzi said PF could have repealed the 2009 NGO Act in the same way it had done the National Constitution Conference (NCC) immediately it assumed office last year.

“This Act is poison. Why can’t they change it? They managed to amend the NCC Act immediately they took over government, why can’t they change this one?” he said.

And Gerald Mutelo of Democratic Governance and Human Rights Advocates (GEGHA) said the Act was criminal and did not respect the fundamental rights of association and assembly and seemed to serve the interests of the formulators.
