POLICE in North-Western province have refuted stories circulating on social media that riots have broken out in some parts of the region fol-lowing the arrest of the United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema yesterday.

Division deputy commissioner of police Chola Katanga told the Daily Nation that the province was quiet and peaceful with people going about their business without disruptions.

“I can confirm with you that there are no riots in the province contrary to what is on social media.  The region is very peaceful,” Mr Katanga said.

Mr Katanga said police officers were on standby and on high alert to curb any form of riotous acts.

“So, we have both motorised and foot patrols across the region and as I am speaking there is no sign whatsoever that people can engage themselves in such acts,” he added.

He also said people should not believe what was on social media be-cause it could cause anarchy.
