THE personal-to-holder mentality among opposition political parties is what has created intra-party conflicts because some people think politics are money-making ventures for their personal survival, Patriotic Front Lusaka provincial youth chairperson Kennedy Kamba has said.
Commenting on the wrangle in the Forum for Democracy Development which has culminated into the suspension of its vice-president Chifumu Banda, Mr. Kamba said dictatorial tendencies have again shown their ugly face in the opposition political parties as their leaders had taken them as institutions for income generation.
He said Mr. Banda’s suspension was ill-timed and an assault on principles of democracy as espoused in the FDD party manifesto and wondered what kind of leadership FDD was portraying especially that its leader Edith Nawakwi has been critical of Government over alleged undemocratic tendencies.
He said the failure by the FDD and the UPND to hold conventions and amend their party constitutions to facilitate permanent positions for the incumbent presidents was a danger to intra-party democracy and an indication that some politicians had joined politics as a means of survival.
He said instead of making manoeuvres to amend the constitutions to appease their leaders, the parties should go for a convention in order to win the support of their followers and Zambians at large as imposing themselves on the people who have sacrificed for the parties robbed them of quality leadership.
