BY CHIKUMBI KATEBE

A RETIRED Zambia Army officer has been jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of obtaining money by false pretences.

According to a statement by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) public relation manager, Timothy Moono, Sergeant Clement Kanyembo of Lusaka’s Chunga township was convicted on four counts of obtaining money by false pretences.

In counts one and two Kanyembo, while working with unknown persons, obtained K300 from Lovemore Phiri and K200 from Richwell Sichinga claiming that he would help them get recruited into the Zambia Army.

In count three, Kanyembo between 1st January, 2014, and 30th June, 2014 obtained K1,000 cash from Roy Chalangwa by promising him that he would facilitate his recruitment in the Zambia Army when in fact not. In the fourth count, Kanyembo between 1st January 2014 and 30th June, 2014, obtained K2,400 cash from Lydia Chisempi by promising that he would facilitate the recruitment of Lillian Makuya, Patricia Chiti and Leonard Kabalata in the Zambia Army.

Kanyembo was arrested on 18th November, 2014, and charged with the four counts.

Principal Resident Magistrate Prince Mwiinga, sitting in Lusaka has since sentenced Kanyembo to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour in count one and has further sentenced him to six months imprisonment with hard labour in counts two, three and four.

The sentences will run concurrently with effect from 3rd January, 2017, the date when Kanyembo was remanded in custody for having earlier escaped from detention.
