RESIDENTS of Katima-Mulilo in Sesheke on Monday ran amok after a rumour that a local businessman was practicing ritual activities.

Residents demonstrated and rioted following Mukwendela Mukwendela’s alleged involvement in ritual activities and witchcraft.

Western Province Commissioner of Police Charles Lungu confirmed the development to the Daily Nation in a telephone interview.

Mr. Lungu said that the incident happened at around 13:00 hours on Monday after Mr Mukwendela’s sister, Ms Fridah Mukwendela, said her brother was a wizard.

He said that the accusation was made in public at the Katima-Mulilo market.

This attracted the marketeers who broke the shops belonging to Mr Mukwendela and destroyed goods.

Mr Lungu said quick response by Police in full riot gear who quickly dispatched the mob with tear gas saved the shops from worse damage.

Mr Lungu said that the situation has since returned to normal while the sister and her brother were kept at Sesheke police for their safety.
