GOVERNMENT’s determination to explore more viable policies aimed at boosting agriculture production at both household and national levels must be commended by all meaningful Zambians, Southern Province Patriotic Front (PF) deputy information and publicity secretary Trymore Mwenda has said.

Mr Mwenda noted that the agricultural sector remained a pillar of the Zambian economy as it contribute to economic growth, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as well as in the area of employment creation.

He said the party in Southern Province strongly supports President Edgar Lungu’s efforts because the agriculture sector had in the recent years continued to be a priority area of government through increased annual budgetary allocations so as to enhance productivity on food security, income generation and poverty reduction.

“We are particularly indebted to our hard working father of our country, President Lungu, for ensuring that Ministry of Agriculture is prioritizing key sectors such as agricultural diversification, FISP, irrigation development support programs, farming mechanisation, research and development.

“We believe that, by Government collaborating with other stakeholders in the agriculture sector to carry out vigorous research; it would enable the country benefit from more advanced technologies such as irrigation schemes unlike the current dependence on rainfall to support crop production,” he said.

Mr Mwenda also commended Southern Province Traditional Chiefs particularly Chief Mweemba and Chief Sinazongwe for the support they had continued to render to government and President Lungu.

“The President was warmly welcomed by the Chiefs when he recently visited Southern Province and they also encouraged him to remain steadfast in his leadership as he continues to rule the country.

“We are happy with the chiefs for openly encouraging the President not to be distracted by some ‘power-hungry’ politicians and citizens, but his need to continue delivering development and working with them,” he said.
