THE Kabwe Municipal Council has suspended street vending indefinitely to facilitate a massive cleaning exercise to prevent the spread of cholera in the district.
Speaking at a media briefing, the mayor, Mr Prince Chileshe said the defence forces would today move in to clean the town and unblock the drainages so that water can flow freely within the central business district.
Mr Chileshe said the cleaning exercise was a necessary evil that needed to be done to prevent loss of lives through cholera despite the inconvenience caused to the street vendors.
He has appealed to street vendors and the general public to cooperate with the men in uniform that have been tasked to carry out the cleaning and to also take part in the exercise as it was for a good cause.
“This is a directive from President Edgar Lungu and he is not happy with the inconvenience caused to vendors by suspending them from selling but this is a necessary evil that needed to be done to prevent loss of lives through cholera,” said Mr Chileshe.
He said the council has banned cooking food on the streets and buying of raw food from the streets and has urged the street vendors and the public to comply with the council regulations.
He also stated that the council would this week move in high risk areas to bury the shallow wells and contaminated pit latrines among them Katondo, Makululu, Ngungu, Shamabanse and Chimanimani townships.
