UNITED Party for National Development (UPND), risks being disbanded if it is proved that its members are behind the wave of infernos and other crimes that have rocked the country.
UPND former vice-president for politics Cannicius Banda yesterday said the spate of terror that has traumatized the nation in the recent past did not befit a political party wanting to take over the running of Government and it was sad that the party was no longer willing to fight for power using civilized means and merely bent on destroying lives.
Zambia has experienced a spate of fires across the country reminiscent of a real terrorist group that has burnt property such as markets and disrupting electricity power lines without detection.
The investigative wings are on the verge of establishing the true cause of the fires and identifing the saboteurs.
Dr Banda warned that UPND which was indirectly being accused of being behind the calamities, risked being disbanded if it was proved that they indeed were behind the acts of terror.
“For the UPND, should it be proved that they indeed are behind the spate of acts of terror and the seemingly guerilla warfare now being waged in the country, they risk being banned,” Dr Banda warned in an interview yesterday.
He said the opposition political party could also be disbanded if its members continued to behave in a manner that threatened national security.
He pointed out that the United Progressive Party (UPP) was disbanded in the 1970s on account of its members becoming a danger to national security, peace and unity.
“In August of 1971, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe’s UPP was disbanded because it became a danger to national unity and peace through its linkage to violence and social unrest.
Dr Banda warned that in a similar fashion, the opposition UPND could be disbanded if it failed to keep its members in check.
