FAREWELL TO MINISTER OF ENERGY, MATHEW NKHUWA

He has left Zambia’s energy transition on the correct path

THIS week’s article is dedicated to bidding farewell to the Minister of Energy, Mr Mathew Nkhuwa who has from February 14, 2018 to May 14, 2021.

He has been one of the longest serving ministers at the Ministry of Energy under the Patriotic Front where others served for only a few months in the same role.

This is one of the ministries where there is a relatively high turnover of both ministers and permanent secretaries. This Ministry is at the cutting edge of Energy. Energy is the life blood of a modern economy.  Lack of energy security has potential to imperil national security.

Mr Nkhuwa was appointed Minister of Energy on Valentine’s day, February 14, 2018 (Wednesday) taking over from Mr David Mabumba who moved to the Ministry of General Education. Prior to his appointment, he served as minister of Works and Supply from October 2016. Therefore, he has served a full-term as Cabinet Minister.

He was also Member of Parliament for Chingola Constituency and served on a number of Parliamentary Committees.  Mr Nkhuwa will be remembered by many stakeholders differently but from my side as an active player in the sector, I have the following to say:

Three weeks ago, I had a one on one meeting with an investor at Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka who wanted to consult me on some energy-related matter.
