By ROGERS KALERO

CITIZENS should not listen to desperate politicians who are focusing on Professor Nkandu Luo’s previous relationship with students when she was Higher Education Minister, the Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) has said. The union said students must instead engage the Patriotic Front’s Presidential running mate on various challenges they were facing.COBUSU President, Lawrence Kasonde, said Prof Luo, would soon assume a higher position of influence hence it was important for students to interact with her positively.Mr Kasonde said during a media briefing in Kitwe that it was important that the students interacted with Prof Luo so that their challenges could be addressed.

“We will soon communicate with the rest of our students across the country on how we will have this programme brought to a success. An appeal to all our students across the country is that, this year being an election year, students should not be influenced and used by desperate politicians.“The big question is, where were they all this while? Where have they been? As students, let us not listen to desperate politicians who are just focusing on a few mistakes she made, but should also look the positive things she did,’’ Mr Kasonde said.

He said the stance of COBUSU on political issues in higher learning institutions was that students should be non-partisan“As student from the second biggest learning institution in Zambia, allow me to mention that our stance on political interference in higher learning institutions is that, government institutions work with the government of the day, hence students should be non-partisan.“If a student or students so wishes to endorse or support a political leader, they should do it in their own individual capacities and not on behalf of students,’’
