ALICK NKHATA FLYOVER WON’T BE DEMOLISHED – EXPERTS

By KETRA KALUNGA

A SPECIAL committee of experts assigned by Government to inspect remedial works on Alick Nkhata Flyover Bridge in Lusaka and give recommendations concluded that it is not necessary to demolish the bridge.the Daily Nation can report.

According to the project consultants whose names have been withheld, the demolition of the flyover bridge is now off the books.

This follows continued demands by the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) that the bridge be demolished for not meeting recommended specifications despite modification of the works by the contractor.

Project consultants said a special committee sent by the government to inspect the works concluded that the bridge was safe after remedial works.

They said all the safety issues raised earlier had been rectified following the recommendations made by the committee. They said the demands by EIZ were misplaced and would not yield anything.

The consultants said the committee sent to inspect the bridge included a team from the Ministry of Works and Supply, Local Government, Road Development Agency and the EIZ themselves.

The consultants assured that the bridge is safe following the completion of modification works such as smoothing of the transition point which raised a lot of concern among the public. They said the bridge was not a death trap as attested by the fact that no accident had been recorded all this time it had been in use.
