By JOHN KOMBE

Police in Chongwe have launched a manhunt of a suspected criminal who suffered gunshot wounds as he was trying to steal motor vehicle parts from a residence in Chombwa village of Chongwe.

The unidentified suspected male criminal is reported to have been in the company of two others also unidentified on the day of the shooting.

It is reported that on June 17  around 02:30 hours the three were trying to steal motor vehicle parts from the residence of a Mr. Bizwell Tembo, 67 of the same village.

The named owner is said to have come out of the house after he heard strange noise and was met with stones from one of the criminals.

He then shot the criminal in the chest using a Baikal 9mm pistol and is reported to have instantly fallen to the ground. Unfortunately police did not find the suspected criminal when they visited the scene in the company of the complainant.

Only empty cartridges and slippers were found on the scene.

Assistant Zambia Police public relations officer, Danny Mwale confirmed the development in a statement made available to the Daily Nation yesterday. He confirmed that police had received the report of the shooting incident and had launched a manhunt. He has since appealed to members of the public to be on the lookout for the suspected criminal who is reported to have escaped with gunshot wounds.

He therefore urged members of the public and health facilities to notify the police in case they meet someone presenting with gunshot wounds.
