By NATION REPORTER

GOVERNMENT has instructed local authorities to enhance measures aimed at preventing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the wake of the increased new cases.

Ministry of Local Government Permanent Secretary, Mathew Ngulube said councils were expected to take a multisectoral approach with other institutions so as to mitigate against the spread of the pandemic.

Mr Ngulube directed local authorities to ensure that health inspectors and other relevant officers working in close corroboration with the police   enforce adherence to the stipulated Covid-19 prevention and control measures by the public.

He urged the council to ensure mandatory and correct wearing of face masks by all citizens in public places such as markets, bus stations and on public transport.

Mr Ngulube said in a memo that provision of facilities  such as hand washing, sanitizing and waste management must be strictly enforced.

“Particularly in markets, trading places, shopping malls, bus stations and other public places,” he said.

Mr Ngulube also directed councils to regularly clean and disinfect markets, bus stations and other public places.

He ordered local authorities to submit weekly updates to his office through provincial local government officers.
