THE Covid-19 third wave is proving to be more virulent as the numbers of confirmed cases still keep going up, the ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Malama has said.
And Dr. Malama said the Covid-19 isolation and treatment facilities are filling up at an alarming rate due to a surge in the number of cases being recorded in the country.
He announced that the country in the last 24 hours has recorded 2, 065 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 out of 12, 415 tests conducted.
And Dr. Malama said 16 Covid-19 patients have died in the last 24 hours and some of the deaths recorded from the high-density areas.
He said during an update on Covid-19 that the ministry would use a multi-sectoral approach to ensure that taps of community transmissions are closed to address the cause of the increase in the number of cases.
“If the situation continues at this rate unchecked, it will not matter how many more bed spaces we create, as the spaces will swiftly be filled up as well. As such, it is critical that we address the root cause of the problem. If we do not close the taps of community transmission, the situation will continue to escalate,” he said.
Dr. Malama commended other line ministries among them the ministry of Home Affairs and Information and Broadcasting Services for what he described as high level of support and commitment.
He is confident that community interventions would be heightened using a multi-sectoral approach and ultimately win the fight at the community level.
And Dr. Malama said the ministry would in two weeks resume the vaccination programme as it says it’s alive to the fact there is increased demand for the Covid-19 vaccine.
He said the ministry would ensure that the programme is carried out in an orderly manner and does not result in super spreader activity.
