COVID PROMPTS OYDC SUSPEND ACTIVITIES

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

OLYMPIC Youth Development Centre (OYDC) Zambia has suspended all sports activities for 21 days following a surge in Covid-19 cases being recorded in the country.

According to a statement issued by OYDC communications officer Noah Silomba, OYDC Zambia Chief Executive Officer Dr Frederick Chitangala said the suspension is with immediate effect.

Chitangala said that the centre wants to comply with the Covid-19 measures which Secretary to the Cabinet Dr Simon Miti announced on Wednesday as a way to mitigate the escalating cases being recorded daily.

Chitangala added that OYDC is best known for mass participation activities hence the need to suspend all league games such as the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge and other lined up competitions.

“I wish to announce the suspension of all our sports activities for 21 days following Wednesday’s briefing by the Secretary to the Cabinet Dr Simon Miti during which he guided the nation on measures the government has put in place to fight this pandemic.

“May I hasten to reiterate that at OYDC we value the health of every citizen and it is prudent for us to suspend the activities and monitor the situation. During this period, we pray and hope that other athletes and patrons who access the facilities stick to measures the government has put in place,” Chitangala said.

He said Eden University National Division One outfit Kafue Celtics will continue to use the facilities on condition that all measures are observed.

“The lodge will remain open to the public and the restaurant will only operate on take-away basis,” Chitangala said.
