Mayukwayukwa Refugee Camp records zero COVID-19 case
Mayukwayukwa Refugees settlement Officer Solomon Mulenga has commended government and its cooperating partners for enhancing the wellness of refugees.
Mr Mulenga discloses that since Coronavirus broke out in 2019,Mayukwayukwa Refugees settlement has not recorded any cases of the global pandemic.
ZANIS reports that the refugees officer attributed the COVID-19 zero case status of the settlement to continued sensitisation activities and strict adherence to the prevention measures.
He emphasized that following government’s continued partnership with stakeholders such as UNHCR and Caritas among others, his office has remained committed to providing quality service delivery to the refugee community.
Mr Mulenga made the remarks yesterday in Kaoma district during the visit by a media team on the Mayukwayukwa field mission ahead of the World Refugees Day slated for June 20 2021.
“Since COVID-19 broke out, we have not recorded any cases of the pandemic and we are working with stakeholders such as UNHCR and World Vision among others to sensitize the people to observe the five golden rules,” he said.
And Mayukwayukwa II rural health center nurse in _charge Mutumba Mufungulwa said the centre attends to over 1000 patients per day.
Ms Mufungulwa cited malaria as among the common diseases that patients are diagnosed with.
In the Education Sector, the Mayukwayukwa refugees settlement that has a population of 19,424 refugees and has seven schools.
And Mayukwayukwa zonal Head Teacher Tolosi Kabu expressed gratitude that the settlement has so far an enrollment of 3,847 pupils whose performance he said is splendid.
Disclosing that the seven have also embraced government’s Production unit which is faring well, Mr Kabu said Mayukwayukwa combined and Boarding schools that have recorded gains in both poultry and crop farming.
” Pupils are doing very well and the school feeding program is reducing absenteeism . Like here at Mayukwayukwa primary school we harvested over 300 bags of maize and we have fish ponds and piggery,” he stressed.
In the Agriculture Sector, 100 Refugees received support under the Farmer Input Support Program in the 2020/2021 farming season.
Refugees Officer Solomon Mulenga recollected that the farmers performed well, adding that 200 will be supported in the forth farming season.
Mayukwayukwa refugees settlement , sitting on the 5,000 hectares of land if which 10,500 is allocated for schemes former Refugees, receives on average 2530 new refugee arrivals daily mainly from the Democratic Republican of Congo ( DR Congo). –
