Tanker drivers’ union gets new interim executive

THE Ministry of Labor and Social Security has appointed a 12 member interim executive for the Zambia Union for Tanker Drivers and Allied workers.

In a letter signed by labor commissioner Given Muntengwa the 12 executive will be led by Steve Chimanya as its president and Alick Lunda as the vice.

The Union which was in office on interim executive was by the tripartite consultative labor council following a recommendation by the auditor of the labor commission in accordance with section 21 of the industrial and labor relations act as amended by Act number eight of 2008.

Mr Muntengwa said that the committee was chosen after a wider consultations were made to ensure the activities of the union are brought within ambit of law.

He said that all members of ZUTDAW are expected to give the interim executive committee members the maximum support in order to bring sanity to the transport sector.

In April this year, Ministry of Labor announced the suspension of the current National Executive Committee of the Zambia Union of Tanker Drivers and Allied Workers.

The suspension was announced by Mr Muntengwa at a press briefing in Lusaka.

He said the decision was reached at during a Tripartite Consultative Labour Council -TCLC- meeting held on the April 23rd 2021.

Mr. Muntengwa explained that the TCLC decided to suspend the Union after learning that it was collecting fees from members which are not specified in the Union constitution.
