By MICHAEL MIYOBA

UNITED Bank of Africa (UBA) has gifted the Zambia national women’s team K112, 000 to help them prepare for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games scheduled to kick off next month in Japan.

UBA Board chairperson Kankasa Mayuba said the Pan African bank is confident that the Copper Queens will represent the continent diligently when they compete at the Olympic Games.

Mayuba, who hailed FAZ and the Copper Queens for qualifying for the Olympics said women’s football can equally be as popular and have an even greater impact with concerted efforts from key stakeholders.

Mayuba reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting the Copper Queens who have been in camp for over three months preparing for the games.

“Today the need to promote gender equality at global regional national and local level cannot be over emphasised. As a bank we are committed to expanding opportunities for women and are alive to the call of girls and women

Meanwhile, Copper Queens fundraising committee chairperson, Charity Lumpa hailed UBA for the support.

Lumpa said the donation will go a long way to help the team achieve its target of bringing a gold medal to make Zambia and the whole continent proud.

“We haven’t reached the target we were hoping to reach of US$2 million. We had almost the whole year to do that but what we have received will go a long way.

The Copper Queens are drawn in Group F with China, Brazil and the Netherlands for the Tokyo games which will run from July 21-August 6 in Japan.
