CANCEL MONZE PARLEY POLLS, ECZ URGED

By NAMO PHIRI

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) must cancel elections for Monze Central constituency following the withdrawal from the race by independent candidate, Maambo Musute, a lawyer Jonas Zimba has said.

Mr Zimba said demands by the Patriotic Front (PF) for ECZ to cancel elections in Monze Central were justified.

“Article 52, 6 of the Constitution of Zambia provides that in an event where a candidate withdraws elections have to be cancelled, that is the law,” Mr Zimba said. PF Media Director, Antonio Mwanza, also said ECZ must cancel Monze elections just like it had done Mandevu, Lusaka Central and Mpulungu Constituencies including Kamakonde Ward.

“We are, however, surprised that the Commission has not cancelled the election in Monze Central constituency were Mr Mambo Musute, an Independent Parliamentary candidate withdrew his nomination on 14th June, 2021.

“We hereby urge the Commission to act in accordance with the law and cancel the aforementioned election,” Mr Mwanza said.

Mr. Mwanza said ECZ was on firm ground to invoke provisions of Article 52(6) of the Constitution of Zambia to cancel an election when a candidate dies, resigns or is disqualified by a court or tribunal.
