UPND MEMBER SUES COPS – FOR ALLEGEDLY DENYING HIM THE CHANCE TO STAND FOR ELECTIONS AS A WARD

By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA

A UPND member has sued two police officers for allegedly denying him the chance to stand for elections as a ward councillor, lamenting that he has lost out on K500, 000 in earnings and allowances he would have been entitled to.

Mr Manyando Mushokobanji thus wants the two officers – Sylvester Chewe and Gift Nkhoma – of Nalolo Police Station in Western Province to compensate him K500, 000 which he would have earned as Nanjucha ward councillor.

According to a statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court, Mr Mushokobanji stated that he was the UPND adopted candidate for Nanjucha Ward.

However, on May 19 this year, when he went to file his nomination scheduled for 12:00 hours the two officers maliciously picked him up and took him to Nalolo Police Station.

Mr Mushokobanji claims that he was in detention from 11:45 hours and only released around 17:00 hours.

He said the two officers ruined his reputation as a reliable politician and denied him the future earnings and allowances had he been voted as a councillor.
