DMMU TO DISTRIBUTE 15M FACE MUSKS IN SCHOOL

GOVERNMENT says it will distribute over 15 million face masks to all the schools across the country before the resumption of classes next week.

Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) national coordinator Chanda Kabwe said the unit has already started the distribution of COVID-19 prevention materials to all government and community schools in Zambia to protect learners from contracting the deadly disease when classes resume next week.

“DMMU is set to distribute over 15 million face masks to all the schools across the country before the resumption of classes next week,” Mr Kabwe said.

In a statement by DMMU senior communications officer Mathews Musukwa, Mr Chanda also said that Government was happy with the preparedness made by the multi-sectoral team tasked to inspect schools ahead of the re-opening on August 23.

He explained that the multi-sectoral team led by the DMMU conducted an inspection of schools to ascertain their preparedness to re-open in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Kabwe said the nationwide joint assessment of schools were conducted with the involvement of stakeholders such as the Ministry of General Education, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Local Government.

Following the inspection, he said, government has started the distribution of COVID-19 prevention materials to all government and community schools across the country to protect learners from contracting the deadly pandemic when classes resume.

Mr Kabwe said Government had also disbursed matching resources to the District Education Board Secretaries (DEBS) to ensure that the masks and other materials are distributed from the district offices to the schools.

He has since assured parents that with the measures put in place by government, learners would be safe in schools as they resume classes.
