MPOMBO WARNS AGAINST VINDICTIVE FAST COURTS

By NOEL IYOMBWA
THE specialised fast track courts on corruption should consist of professionals who will ensure there is transparency and those who will sit there should not become rich at the expense individuals being probed, former Defence Minister Dr George Mpombo has said.

Speaking in an interview Dr Mpombo said the introduction of the fast track courts is a welcome move but it should not just end up as a conduit to enrich some individuals.

He said that the court should be a special purpose vehicle to probe irregular transactions in Government.
“The court should consist of people with a good background, not individuals who will end up enriching themselves at the expense of the people being probed,” Dr Mpombo said.

Dr Mpombo explained that the core value of the court should be fairness and legitimacy.
He said that people who will be brought before the court should be regarded as innocent until proved guilty.

President Hichilema announced that his administration will introduce specialised fast-track stolen assets recovery mechanisms and courts for corruption and economic crimes.

The President has waged war on corruption adding that he will not spare any expense to ensure that perpetrators are made to account for their impropriety.

Mr Hichilema warned that there will be no sacred cows in the fight against corruption – past, present and future.
