GOVT TO ENGAGE ZRL, LCC OVER POLICE POST FACING DEMOLITION

By ADRIAN MWANZA

WE are going to engage the Zambia Railways and Lusaka City Council over the controversy involving Richard Kachingwe Police Post in Kamwala which is part of buildings facing demolition, says minister of Local Government and Rural Development Garry Nkombo.

Mr Nkombo in an interview said he had not yet been furnished with the full details about the possible demolition but that he would engage the two stakeholders for them to find a lasting solution.

The minister expressed ignorance about the matter but said he would get to the bottom of the issue and that those that would be found wanting would be answerable.

“Let me get to the bottom of the matter but what I can assure you is that we are going to resolve this matter amicably,” he said. He said people need not panic because the issue would be resolved in the shortest period and that he had taken keen interest in the matter.

Meanwhile, former Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo last week said the premises was just handed to them by the local authority for use and that they did not have any authority over it.

Ms Katongo said the local authority was better placed to give guidance because they were the ones that handed the station to the Police.

“The same was built by the local authority, hence get a comment from them since the police were just invited to occupy,” she said. And the Lusaka City Council said the matter was being dealt by ZRL and that all queries needed to be directed to them.
