PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has emphasised the need to promote unity and peace after 57 years of independence.
Speaking after laying wreaths at the burial site of the four late Presidents.
The President disclosed that he would soon visit Chinsali and Mala to lay wreaths on the graves of Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe and Harry MwaangaNkumbula and other great sons of the land who fought hard for the country’s freedom.
“We got independence because of the commitment of many and we thank them for that. The freedom fighters led by KK then, and you will see very soon, I’m going to Chinsali, to lay a wreath on the grave of Simon MwansaKapwepwe, from there I will move to Mala to lay a wreath on the grave site of Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula and the rest of them who worked so hard in unity to deliver independence. Unity of purpose,” President Hichilema said.
He said there is need for Zambians to forget their differences and work together to drive the country’s economic and social independence.
President Hichilema also hailed the late presidents for working hard to advance the agenda for the people of Zambia.
He said the new dawn government will carry on with the agenda left by the four presidents to deliver reunification of the country.
“We believe that now our focus is unity of purpose. To deliver reunification of this country and to drive economic and social independence that’s it, and I invite all Zambians to unite and work together. It doesn’t matter what our differences are, those differences are minor. Things that unite us are more than those that divide us,” he said.
The President laid wreaths on the tombs of first republican President Kenneth Kaunda before paying his respect to Zambia’s second President Frederick Chiluba.
President Hichilema also laid wreathes on President Levy Mwanawasa’s tomb and repeated the same tradition on President Michael Sara’s tomb before he proceeded to State House for the Independence Day celebrations.
