By JACKSON MAPAPAYI
POLICE in Mushindamo have arrested four United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres and one from the Patriotic Front after the two rival parties clashed.
According to North-Western Province deputy commissioner of police Dr Fred Mulenga, the incident happened on Tuesday around 15:00 hours at St Dorothy in Kalilele ward and identified the suspects as Francis Kakompe, Vincent Chunda and Philip Musha of UPND and Mark Muteba from PF.
Dr Mulenga explained that the fracas happened when the UPND cadres followed PF cadres who were having their lunch at Fly Zone bar and restaurant after they were done with accreditations for their polling agents.
He disclosed that the cadres were armed with stones and sticks and that there was physical confrontation between the two rival parties.
“Acting on the report, Police went out to the scene and found some cadres armed with stones and sticks in action.
“Upon seeing the Police, the cadres ran away but police managed to apprehend four suspects, three UPND cadres namely; Francis Kakompe, Vincent Chenda and Philip Musha and one from PF being Mark Muteba,” said Dr Mulenga.
He said the suspects have since been charged for conduct likely to cause the breach of peace contrary to section 178(f) cap 87 of the laws of Zambia and they are being held at St Dorothy Police Station.
Dr Mulenga has encouraged political players to maintain peace as they appeal to the voters and that violence will not be tolerated.
