SENIORS SIDELINED IN SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER?

By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

SOME Senior citizens in Kitwe’s Kapoto area have complained of not benefiting from the social cash transfer funds.

Speaking in random interviews, the aged said many are   times that some officials from the social welfare   interviewed  them but that nothing was coming their way.

One of the complainants Jennifer Phiri said most people that were benefitting from the programme were not even eligible to be on the program.

Ms Phiri wondered how they found themselves to be benefiting when they did not meet the criteria.

“ We feel the programme has been politicized and only a few of those that are aligned with some individuals or political parties are considered, which we feel should not be the case,” she said.

Last week, Minister of Community Development and Social Services Doreen Mwamba cautioned officers in the ministry against abrogating guidelines in the administration of social protection programmes.

Ms Mwamba said government would not condone mismanagement of resources meant for vulnerable people.

She said it was the duty of responsible officers to ensure the social cash transfer and food security packs reach the intended beneficiaries.
