KAMFINSA MP WANTS OLD WATER BILLS CANCELLED

By ROGERS KALERO

I HAVE submitted a motion to urge the government to cancel historical water bills which people in various townships have been living with despite erratic water supply from some commercial water utility companies, Kamfinsa Member of Parliament Christopher Kang’ombe has said.

Mr Kang’ombe said the submitted motion to urge Government to cancel historical water bills will be debated on the floor of the house on December 8, 2021 and has been seconded by Mandevu MP Christopher Shakafuswa.

The former Kitwe Mayor was speaking at the weekend during a meeting with residents of Ndeke Village, Mukuba Natwange, Ndeke township and Natwange to discuss various issues affecting them.

The residents, through their MP appealed to Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSSC) to consider cancelling old bills on account of erratic water supply in the area.

The appeal from the residents forced the MP to disclose the efforts he was making to ensure that old bills accumulated despite erratic water supply were cancelled.

“The issue of huge water bills despite the erratic water supply has been an issue for a long time now and this is why during the campaigns, we talked about it. I have engaged NWSSC over the same issue. I have written to them.

“I have even gone further by submitting a motion to urge government to cancel historical water bills which people in various townships have been living with despite erratic water supply from some commercial water utility companies,’’ Mr Kang’ombe said

During the meeting, the residents said they had no problem with paying water bills provided there was normal water supply in their respective areas unlike the situation when the supply was erratic

Ms Jessie Banda said NWSSC should consider cancelling the water bills and start afresh with improved water supply in the respective areas which was facing erratic water supply

“If NWSSC can provide quality service delivery, we are more than ready to pay for services, but if services are pathetic, then it will be difficult for the water utility company to convince us to pay bills.

“The best thing is to cancel the bills and start afresh improved water supply in the respective areas which was facing erratic water supply,’’ Ms Banda said

Ends.
