TIZ URGES ECL TO QUIT POLITICS

By ADRIAN MWANZA

TIZ Executive Director Maurice Nyambe said that it was very clear in the current laws that the former head of State needed to relinquish his PF presidency for him to get his entitlements.

FORMER President Edgar Lungu should step down as Patriotic Front president because his stay would mean continued involvement in active politics and it would definitely make him ineligible to receive his benefits, Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has said.

“If Mr Lungu continues to be PF president, it will imply his continued involvement in active politics and it will definitely make him ineligible to receive his benefits, that is very clear in our current laws,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Nyambe said the organisation is closely monitoring the perceived persecution of PF leaders by the Zambia Police.

Mr Nyambe said they were closely watching the situation but insisted notwithstanding the perceived persecution of PF leaders, police were well within their mandate to pursue any such person or individuals suspected of fraud

He however cautioned that the investigations should not be premised on settling of political scores in any way.

“As TIZ, we do not have any evidence that the current investigations being done by police are politically motivated, should it emerge that they are, we will be the first to condemn it because we believe police must deliver on their mandate with the highest degree of professionalism at all times,” Mr Nyambe said.
