Choma District Commissioner Gamela Sikaleya has urged youths to be innovative and come up with business ideas.
He said youths can take advantage of the creation of the ministry of Green Economy and work with it through various business ventures.
The District Commissioner was speaking when he officiated at the Choma Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Organization (CADRO) anniversary party.
He further hailed the organisation for coming up with an initiative of making charcoal briquettes which he said is a good way of combating climate change.
Mr Sikaleya said the briquettes initiative which discourages the cutting down of trees is in line with government’s efforts of fighting deforestation and combating climate change.
“These are ideas we want to see youths pursuing, and I would like to urge you to look out for youth empowerment as it can be easy for you to be empowered because you are already showing productivity,” said Mr Sikaleya.
CADRO Chairperson Maketo Mukengami explained that the charcoal briquettes initiative is an income generation activity for the organisation and people undergoing rehabilitation.
He explained that this is one way of keeping people undergoing rehabilitation busy and stop them from engaging in alcohol and drug abuse.
Mr Mukengami said most clients in the organisation are unemployed hence trying to make some income and skill through the initiative.
And a recovered marijuana addict encouraged other young people to desist from drug abuse and seek help through organisations such as CADRO.
Tawanda Ngoma who disclosed that he abused marijuana from 2013 to 2019 and has now been rehabilitated, said youths can be very productive if they stop abusing drugs.
Mr Ngoma observed that a good number of the youth human resource is still not productive as they engage in abusing drugs.
He further called on families of people addicted to alcohol and drugs to get help for them as it can be difficult for one to get sober without support.
