DMMU given 48 hours ultimatum to airlift flood victims in Namwala

Southern Province Permanent Secretary Namani Monze has given the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit ( DMMU ) and the security wing 48 hours ultimatum to evacuate flood victims in Namwala and Monze districts to avoid loss of life.

And government has engaged chief’s Nalumba and Hamusonde of Namwala and Monze districts respectively to assist with the evacuation of their subjects from the flooded areas.

This follows a prediction by the Meteorological department that the province is expected to receive heavy rains that may cause further  floods within 48 hours.

Southern Province meteorological officer Victor Bupe has told Southern Province Permanent Secretary Namani Monze the flood areas are expected to receive more rains after Wednesday this week.

And Dr Monze has requested chief’s Nalumba and Hamusonde to assist the government by encouraging families affected by floods to move to safer areas.

He was speaking after meeting the two traditional leaders at their palaces.

Dr Monze said the  government would not want to see any loss of life due to floods, hence the decision to evacuate the families. -ZANIS
