By MICHAEL MIYOBA
AFTER helping the Ndola giants Zesco United to win four Super League titles, two Absa Cup championships, and two Charity Shield honours, Kenyan international striker Jesse Jackson Were has left the club after spending five years with the nine-time Super League champions.
And Zesco United Chief Executive Officer, Richard Kabwe Mulenga has hailed Were for contributing to the growth of the Ndola outfit as one of the most dedicated servants of the beautiful game.
Were had signed a two-year contract extension in January 2019 to run up to December 2021 transfer window.
Mulenga said Zesco United will never forget the Kenyan king who joined them in 2016 and went on to bring joy to all their followers.
“Five-years ago, we brought Jesse Jackson Were to Ndola as part of our roadmap towards assembling a strong Zesco United side. Today, we can proudly say that he has been a success story for this team.
“Were’s winning mentality has been a catalyst to the growth of this football club. No one will ever forget the goals he has scored for this team and the joy he brought not only to us but also to the Zesco United fans,” Mulenga said.
“He is a true servant of the beautiful game who also sold his country to the outside world very well. We wish him the best of luck in his next journey.”
The 32-year-old tall, dark, lanky striker who was a menace to defenders in both the domestic league and continental football leaves Zesco United a very proud lad having reached a century goals last season before contributing two more in the first half of the current league campaign.
Meanwhile, Zesco United have also released Zimbabwean attacking midfielder, Tafadzwa Rusike after a two-year marriage.
“I would like to thank Rusike for his contribution to the club’s success. He contributed greatly to our league title success last season. We wish him the best of luck in his next chapter in the game,” Mulenga said.
Rusike whose contract ends on December 31, 2021 joined Zesco United during the January 2020 transfer window and signed a two year deal from Zanaco FC.
