THE audit of the supply chain for drugs and other medical supplies has been completed and the procured medicines have started coming into the country, the Ministry of Health has announced.

Ministry of Health spokesperson, Dr Abel Kabalo said the process of scrutinising the supply chain had been completed and drugs started arriving in the country last week.

In an interview, Dr. Kabalo said the drugs would be dispatched to the provinces next week.

“The audit of the supply chain is completed now and that is why last week we even started receiving some supplies of medicines which will be dispatched to the provinces next week,” he said.

Dr. Kabalo said the ministry was unlocking the supply chain and medical supplies have started arriving through the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies (ZAMMSA).

He was reacting to remarks by Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) president, Robert Mwanza who demanded that Government must immediately resume the procurement of medicines and stop the audit because it was not serving the people in any way.

Mr. Mwanza complained that it was not right for the government to suspend the entire procurement of medicines in the name of doing an audit.

He claimed that it was clear that the UPND administration was trying to get rid of all the suppliers that were perceived to have been PF and bring in their own people.

Mr. Mwanza urged the government to stop playing with the lives of Zambians and immediately resume the procurement of medicines while they conduct an audit.

“What we need is procurement of medicines as soon as possible, we can’t allow a situation where people are dying as if there is no money in the name of doing an audit and for how long is that audit going to take,” he said.
