ACC under pressure to detain Chitotela – lawyer

THERE are strict instructions from above to have Ronald Chitotela detained despite him being formally arrested, his lawyer Benjamin Mwelwa has said.

Mr Mwelwa from Messrs. Linus E.Eyaa and Partners said his client was driven from Kawambwa the whole night and was taken to ACC offices at around 04:00.

He said the Pambashe Member of Parliament had been charged with two counts of being in possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime contrary to section 71 (1) of the forfeiture of proceeds crime Act No 19 of 2010.

Mr Mwelwa said it was shocking that his client had been denied bond despite being charged and that it was a political gimmick aimed at frustrating him.

He said his client had been detained at Ridgeway Police Post and would appear in court today.

“What I can tell you is that the ACC have confirmed that there are serious orders not to give our client bond at all costs,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kabushi MP Bowman Lusambo’s lawyer Makebi Zulu said the charges slapped on his client were preposterous and trumped up.

Mr Zulu said that there was no way his client interfered with witnesses when he did not even know who they were.

“It’s a laughable matter which we are going to fight with all we have because these are trumped up charges that don’t hold water,” he said.
