Mumbi Phiri, Chilekwa case not on court cause list

By KETRA KALUNGA

LAWYERS for Mumbi Phiri and her co-accused Shebby Chilekwa have complained over the delay by the HighCcourt to put their clients on the cause list.

Ms Phiri and Mr. Chilekwa were arrested in February, 2022 on separate dates and charged with murder, a non bailable offence.

The lawyers from Makebi Zulu Advocates in a letter dated May 12, 2022 addressed to the clerk of session in the Mongu High Court complained that their clients have been omitted on the cause lists for, April, May and June.

They complained that their clients were anxious to have their day in court and have not been heard since they were arrested three months ago.

The law firm has since asked the High Court to put their clients on the cause list because they have been in custody for a long time without knowing their fate.

They said just recently, they were told the matter would be heard in June, 2022 session but the names of their clients have been omitted on the cause list.

The lawyers said the matter was last in court in Kaoma where the accused were being held before being transferred to Mongu on March 24, 2022 when the state presented a committal certificate.

“Our clients matter ought to have been on the cause listed for the April, 2022 session and this did not happen. Later we were informed that the matter would be on the cause listed in May, 2022 but still this did not happen,” they complained.

They have since requested that the matter be on the cause list for the June, 2022 session by way of a supplementary cause list and that it should be heard expeditiously.
