Nkana MP urges govt to reduce tax on small-scale miners

By SHERRY CHABALA

GOVERNMENT should reduce taxation on small-scale miners for Zambians to fully benefit from the mining sector, Nkana Independent Member of Parliament, Binwell Mpundu, has said.

Mr Mpundu said it was important to encourage local players to participate in mining and one way of doing that, is reducing taxation.

He said local miners should enjoy tax holidays the same way foreign investors are doing.

He said it has been realised that there are many areas in the mining sector that have remained under developed due to lack of incentives that would compel locals to fully participate in the sector.

Mr Mpundu said it would be folly for Zambia to claim that it benefits from mining when the majority of players in the sector were foreigners.

He explained that the inflow of revenue goes to the countries of origin of these investors.
