THE defamation of the president law should be abolished because it is retrogressive to democracy, Patriotic Front Member of the Central Committee Dr Canisius Banda says.
Dr. Banda, a former vice president of the United Party for National Development has also demanded the unconditional release of Patriots for Economic Progress president Sean Tembo.
He said the law on the defamation of the president is archaic and the country cannot continue applying a law that does not add any value to its democracy.
Dr Banda was speaking shortly after visiting Mr Tembo who is detained at Woodlands police station in Lusaka.
He said while in opposition, President Hakainde Hichilema condemned this law as such and he should ensure this archaic law is done away with.
And Socialist Party member of the national executive council Chrispin Chiinda said the law does not add any value to the democratic dispensation of the country.
