IMF keen to help Zambia resolve debt

THE International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said it is providing all necessary information and assurances to Zambia’s creditors for them to reach favorable conclusions on the negotiations.

Visiting IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said this will help to expeditiously resolve the country’s debt restructuring situation.

Ms. Georgieva says the IMF is working relentlessly in a bid to help Zambia resolve its debt situation with its creditors.

The IMF Managing Director was speaking when she called on Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane at his office yesterday.

And Dr. Musokotwane said addressing Zambia’s excessive debt has been top on the Government’s agenda.

He said this why Government has been focused on pushing for the debt relief.

Dr. Musokotwane further thanked the IMF for the continued support towards addressing Zambia’s debt.

Meanwhile President Hakainde Hichilema has said that negotiations with the IMF needed to be concluded before the end of the first quarter.

He said that if the two parties failed to conclude the talks, it would distort all the good efforts that had been put in place hence the need to ensure that talks were concluded.

“We need to conclude our discussions before the end of the first quarter of this year otherwise it will cause confusion if not concluded,” President Hichilema said.

Mr Hichilema also said that he was sure that the two parties would manage to conclude the discussions because they were working under a common frame work.

And president Hichilema has cautioned peddling lies that the IMF was fashioned to destroy countries like Zambia through its policies which was not the case.
