GWEMBE IN K78 MILLION SOS FOR BRIDGES, ROADS

GWEMBE is in need of over K78 million to be able to repair all damaged roads that have become impassable due to floods in the area, council secretary Maliwa Muchuu has disclosed. 

In a letter dated January 29, 2023, and addressed to Southern Province Permanent Secretary and copied to Road Development Agency (RDA) regional office, Mr Muchuu stated that the District has been experiencing flash floods for a long time resulting in washing away of roads and bridges.

He said this year alone, a number of infrastructure were affected by the floods which has left a trail of destruction to Bridges, Drifts and Culverts.

Mr Muchuu said the entire Road network has been left with serious gullies and has made the Roads Impassable to the public who now unable to access the much needed services such as Health facilities, Schools, Fishing Camps, Markets and Farming Areas. 

He named the D375 road which leads to Chipepo Habour as the most affected stretch which had its four bridges and 15 Culverts damaged and requires about K17,500,000 to repair. 

Others are Hanyimbo- Bunyete road , requiring K6,100,000.00, D375- Hamatuba Fishing, requiring K10,600,000, Makuyu- Chaamwe road, requiring K12,000,000.00, and Kkoma- Sinafala- Simulilika road, requiring K12,000,000.00 among others all totaling K 78,800,000.
