ATTACHING a timeframe to conclude corruption case will jeopardize the justice delivery system because the judiciary has no capacity to conclude cases within 90 days, Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) president, Kelvin Fube Bwalya has said.
Mr Bwalya popularly known as KBF, said although having a limited time in which cases must be concluded was good and well-intended, the current scenario in Zambia does not allow.
He said at the moment, Zambia does not have the necessary infrastructure and personnel to conclude corruption cases within 90 days.
“We do not have enough specialized Judges and Magistrates to handle specialized cases of corruption and economic crimes, we don’t,” Mr Bwalya said.
He was reacting to President Hakainde Hichilema’s announcement during his address to Parliament on the progress made in the application of national values and principles that Government had created the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to expedite the conclusion of corruption cases and within 90 days
Mr Bwalya said political interference would be another problem that would affect the attainment of this new goal. He said the implementation of the 90 day ultimatum was rushed without considering the basics like having enough courtrooms so that magistrates and the judges do not share courtrooms.
Mr Bwalya said magistrates and judges should have dedicated courtrooms for them to dispose of cases efficiently and effectively.
