Warriors back in top four

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

KABWE Warriors have moved back into the top four on the MTN Zambia Super League table after stunning winless Trident FC 1-0 in a Week-19 fixture played at Shinde Stadium in Mufulira.

A first half goal from Mathews Tolopa was enough to propel Warriors to fourth on the 18-team FAZ Super League table with 32 points.

The victory in the tightly contested match against Trident, who have now recorded nine losses and 10 draws since their promotion from the National Division One league cheered Warriors gaffer Numba Mumamba who hailed the character of his players.

“It was a very difficult game under difficult conditions but the players accounted for themselves well. We dominated the game in the first half but in the second half our opponents came out strongly but we managed to contain them and held on to our lead,” Numba said after the final whistle.

“We are back to winning ways. I think before we go for a break we want to finish on a good note by winning the remaining game,” he said.

Numba admitted that Warriors will have to improve their offence if they are to continue doing well in the second round of the season.

“We just have to improve on our finishing in the second round of the season and make sure we improve on the striking department because that is where we have been lacking.

We have been creating numerous chances almost in every game but our finishing has let us down in the first round. If we can improve on our finishing then we can be a better side in the second round,” Numba said.

He also confirmed the club plans to beef up with two central defenders and one striker going into the second round which promises to be more competitive.

After their latest win, Warriors are on par with third-placed Power Dynamos and only four points behind the league leaders Zesco United.

Meanwhile, “Mighty” Mufulira Wanderers propelled their winless streak to seven games following a goalless draw against Kansanshi Dynamos in the second fixture of the double header at Shinde Stadium.

Wanderers, who have now recorded three draws and four defeats in the last seven matches remain 14th on the log with 21 points one point ahead of Kansanshi Dynamos who are 15th.
