CHIEF Justice Mumba Malila has called on university students to be innovative, creative, and self-reliant in a rapidly evolving world, saying the future demands leaders with vision and purpose.
Dr Malila urged graduates to trust themselves even in the face of adversity and to step into the unknown with courage and foresight.
He stressed that true leadership required resilience, empathy, and collaboration.
He was speaking at the University of Lusaka’s 17th graduation ceremony in Chongwe.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we must recognise the university’s dedication to addressing the pressing needs of society. It stands as a beacon of innovation; a place where ideas will flourish, entrepreneurs will thrive, and future leaders will be cultivated,” Dr Malila said.
He praised the graduation theme, “Lead with Vision and Purpose: Graduating with the Power of Self-Reliance,” describing it as aligned with the university’s mission to equip students with the tools necessary to navigate challenges and seize opportunities.
He advised the graduates that the challenges awaiting them would not always mirror textbook scenarios, emphasizing the importance of passion, curiosity, and resilience to build bridges and ignite change in society.”True leadership is not a solitary pursuit; it requires empathy, collaboration, and mentorship,” Dr Malila added, encouraging the graduates to guide and inspire others as they advance in their careers.
Meanwhile, University of Lusaka Vice Chancellor Professor Pinalo Chifwanakeni urged graduates to define their goals with purpose and pursue them passionately, noting that leadership is measured not by titles but by vision, integrity, and impact.
“You are stepping into a world that is evolving at an unprecedented pace; one shaped by technology, global challenges, and shifting economic landscapes,” Prof Chifwanakeni said.
