THE Zambian national team, Chipolopolo, received a hero’s welcome upon arrival in Nairobi on Saturday night ahead of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
Touching down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the team was met with a vibrant reception from the Zambian community in Kenya, who turned out in large numbers despite the chilly Nairobi weather. Led mostly by enthusiastic students, the crowd was joined by traditional Masai dancers whose gravity-defying acrobatics added Kenyan flair to the colourful welcome.
Even fellow travellers at the airport couldn’t resist the spirited celebrations, momentarily transforming the terminal into a lively Zambian festivity.
Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Alfred Musemuna, hailed the team’s arrival, pledging unwavering support from the diaspora.
“We are very happy to see fellow Zambians. We commit ourselves to support you in whichever way you desire,” Musemuna said. “We’ve agreed with our hosts, Kenya, that they’ll back us too – until we meet them on the pitch.”
Football Association of Zambia Vice President Mutale Ng’andu expressed gratitude for the rousing welcome and promised the team would work hard to reward the support with positive results.
Chipolopolo defender Kabaso Chongo, speaking on behalf of the players, said the reception had fired up the team’s morale ahead of their opening Group A fixture.
Goalkeeper Francis Mwansa meanwhile called on fans to rally behind the Chipolopolo speaking shortly after the team’s arrival.
Mwansa expressed confidence in the squad’s preparations and the warm reception they received. “We were welcomed very well. It’s always encouraging to feel the support even before the first whistle.”
Zambia finds itself in a tough Group A alongside hosts Kenya, Morocco, Angola, and DR Congo.
Mwansa noted the challenge but emphasised the team’s belief and determination.
“It’s a tough group, no doubt. But we’ve worked hard and believe that everything is possible. We just need to focus and give it our all.”
Zambia will kick off their CHAN campaign against DR Congo on August 7, followed by matches against Angola (August 10), Morocco (August 14), and hosts Kenya in a highly anticipated clash on August 17.
