By CHARLES MUSONDA

KABWATA ward six has been given 10 kilometres of the 50-kilometre new road network allocated to Kabwata constituency under the second phase of the L400.

Area Councillor Longa Chiboboka said in an interview that he and Lusaka City Council (LCC) engineers had embarked on identifying gravel roads to be tarred under the second phase of the L400 programme.

“These new roads will have proper drainages, street lights and sidewalks. We are going round with LCC engineers to do mapping of the roads that residents have identified as priority roads which they want to be tarred. One of the roads is this filter road which stretches between Saint Patricks’ School and Nationalist Road,

“We would also like to target the roads that are near the beautiful Julia Chikamoneka play park which we are doing and also the road near Kabwata Cultural Village, which is a tourist attraction. In all these, we have to come into the parameters of the 10 kilometres which we have been allocated under this programme,” Mr. Chiboboka said.

He said the programme would result in immense benefits for both motorists and pedestrians.

It would create employment opportunities during the construction period for those skilled in various forms of construction.

“It will also lead to skills transfer for those that will be involved in the project. It will also benefit the residents because these are some of the promises we made to them in our social contracts. We will ensure that all roads in Kabwata have tarmac and if there is any that will remain, it should be a very negligible number.

“Working together with our Kabwata MP, our aim is to ensure that we fulfil promises we made to the people. These are the priority roads over which residents themselves petitioned us that they must see them done.

The obvious benefit was that the roads would be done from gravel to tarmac and would improve the social wellbeing of the people and outlook of the ward.”
