KITWE City Council on Wednesday set bailiffs on the Copperbelt University (CBU) and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) in an attempt to recover close to K2 million owed to the local authority by the two institutions through unpaid land rates.
The bailiffs confiscated three Toyota Hilux vehicles and one Toyota Hiace mini-bus from to recover the K1.5 million it was owed in unpaid land rates, while at ZNBC, the local authority confiscated three vehicles, a bus and two Toyota Hilux to recover K400,000 owed in unpaid land rates.
Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe and Assistant Council Public Relations Manager Beauty Undi could not comment on the matter as they were locked up in a Plans and Works Development (PWD) meeting in the chamber.
But, CBU Academics Union (CBUAU) Vice-President Alex Mwango and sources at ZNBC confirmed that the council had through the bailiffs seized various properties from the two institutions in an attempt to recover money it is owed in unpaid land rates.
Mr Mwango said bailiffs engaged by the local authority pounced on CBU and confiscated three Toyota Hilux vehicles and one Toyoya Hiace mini-bus from CBU in order to recover the K1.5m it was owed in unpaid land rates.
He, however said the seizure of the university property by the bailiffs engaged by the local authority was strange because the Kitwe Town Clerk Bornwell Luanga was a member of the CBU council who should have advised the university on how best to settle the money it owed the local authority in unpaid land rates.
