A LUSAKA man has justified in a Lusaka Local court his decision to marry another woman, insisting his first wife neither washed his underwear nor prepared water for him to bath.

John Muma, 48, of Garden House compound was testifying in a case in which his wife, Esther Chipili, 43, sued him for divorce after separating for a week.

Chipili told Senior Court Magistrates Abbyshine Michelo and Esther Mulomba at Kanyama Local Court that she sued Muma for divorce because he married another woman.

She explained that after Muma got a K10 from her she trailed him until he went to the house of the woman in question and gave her the money.

Chipili added that she beat the woman and that she also slapped Muma.

Chipili further said that she sued Muma for divorce because he doesn’t work and survives by doing businesses here and there yet wants a polygamous marriage.

She wondered why he wanted another woman when he was unable to take children to school.

“Last year in November we were in court for reconciliation but it failed because of the same woman,’’ said Chipili.

In defence, Muma said that he was a builder and looked after Chipili well. He claimed he was paying school fees for the children and that he even gives them transport money to go to Savannah to play pool.

He explained that he married another woman because Chipili doesn’t wash his underwear and couldn’t prepare him water for bathing.

“I can manage two women because I am a builder they contract me, I can give both women capital for business,’’ said Muma.

Passing judgment, the court said that there were problems in the marriage because Chipili said Muma was not in gainful employment and can’t take children to school.

That he wanted a polygamous marriage which Chipili doesn’t want.

The court granted the couple divorce without compensation but advised that Chipili remains in the house with children.

The court however ordered Muma to pay a children maintenance fee of K500 every month.

The court told Muma to continue his new life with the other woman.
