WASTE management world over is an expensive venture that requires combined effort and a lot of resources, Lusaka Mayor, Wilson Kalumba has said.
Mr. Kalumba repeated his call on the corporate world to join hands with the Lusaka City Council (LCC) in managing waste in the city.
He was speaking in Lusaka at the weekend when he joined Deloitte Zambia employees in the on-going cleaning exercise at Kamwala shopping area to prevent the further spread of cholera.
Mr Kalumba appealed to other business organisations to emulate Deloitte Zambia in keeping the city clean.
Mr Kalumba emphasized that companies should not only come to Lusaka to make money, but also pay back to the communities in which they are operating through corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Mr Kalumba also reminded residents of Lusaka to change their mindset and start contributing towards collection of waste.
“I ‘am delighted that Deloitte Zambia has partnered with us to clean Kamwala area. I must mention that waste management is an expensive venture which we cannot manage alone as a local authority alone hence the need for the corporate world and residents to partner with us, said Mr Kalumba.
And Deloitte Zambia Senior Partner, Humphrey Mulenga, said the organisation was not about reaping economic benefits but also strive to give back to the community in which they operate.
Mr Mulenga said the one day of impact when Deloitte employee’s partner with key stakeholders in doing community work was a fundamental part of who they are.
Mr Mulenga thanked the Mayor for taking time out to join Deloitte employees in the cleaning exercise and pledged continued cooperation with the local authority.
“Your Worship, not only do we as Deloitte seek to make impact that matters in the professional services sense, we are also very focused on making an impact that matters within our community,” said Mr Mulenga.
