By AARON CHIYANZO

THE police command has taken up the matter where officers at Lusaka’s Emmasdale Police Station are reportedly shielding suspects behind the hit and run accident in which a teacher, Paul Njovu lost a leg.

Mr Njovu, aged 27 and a teacher by profession is recovering at the University Teaching Hospital after his leg was amputated following an accident on January 4 in the Emmasdale area.

“My life has been shattered and will never be the same again because my leg is gone,” he said.

Police officers at Emmasdale Police Station who were at the scene are however reluctant to investigate the matter despite the police identifying the vehicle in question which was abandoned at the accident scene.

The owner of the vehicle, a blue Toyota Corolla registration number AJB 4293 which had hit into the car Mr Njovu was in, is reportedly related to a senior officer at the same station.

But Lusaka Province police commissioner, Nelson Phiri has directed the district traffic officer to immediately investigate the allegation after learning of the incident.

Mr Phiri told the Daily Nation that he had only learnt of the incident through the media and had since ordered for a probe into the incident.

He called on the victim and the affected family to avail the command with more details so that they could make follow ups.

“I have directed the DTO to look into this matter. We will do what we can do as command. Please advice the family members to come and see us as senior officers so that we can see what can be done,” said Mr Phiri.

The victim’s uncle, Mr Leonard Kapasula had narrated that he was the driver of a Nissan Caravan registration number BAG 8202 which was hit by the over speeding Toyota Corolla at a T- Junction.

Mr Kasapula said that the bus which was carrying several of his relatives coming from a family meeting overturned after being hit and his nephew’s leg was badly injured in the process which prompted medical personnel to cut it off.

He said that the driver or occupants of the other vehicle, which was found with half empty beer bottles were nowhere to be seen by the time the family scrambled out of the overturned vehicle.
