GREEN Party leader, Peter Sinkamba, has advised fellow politicians to avoid discrediting the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). He said it was unfair to allege that the ECZ was a surrogate of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).
Mr Sinkamba said that all citizens should build confidence in the institution to have a credible electoral process. “In as much as we agree that there are several shortcomings in the manner in which the ECZ has handled the electoral process, this should not be the reason we should discredit the institution and call it names,” he said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday.
Mr Sinkamba said discrediting the reputation of the institution in a manner which would make the international community think that the institution was not capable to handle elections should be discouraged by all citizens. He advised his fellow politicians to live with what they had unlike issuing statements that could end up causing anarchy.
Mr Sinkamba said such behaviour was a recipe for anarchy as people would lose confidence in the electoral process and could start taking the law in their hands. He observed that various countries ended up in turmoil after elections because of such alarming sentiments. Mr Sinkamba urged the ECZ to be careful with how it handled the elections as what people suspected to be unfairly handled could trigger turmoil in the nation.
